Read Around the Planet 2009
2009 was our second year participating in Read Around the Planet. In 2008, one class at Sousa Elementary School participated. Eleven classrooms at four elementary schools connected in 2009. Our classes prepared very creative presentations to share. After each presentation, the classes had the opportunity to ask each other questions about their school, hobbies, and life in the city they live in. It was a wonderful lesson in learning about the similarities and differences between our communities. Below you will find a summary of each exchange that took place.
Ms. Parendo's 4th grade class connected with Honey Brook, Pennsylvania. Our students shared facts about New York landmarks and the other class performed an instrumental version of the True Story of the Three Little Pigs.
Ms. Mody with Ms. Cuomo's 2nd grade class connected with Texas. Ms. Cuomo's students quizzed the other students on the planets. Then the other class taught our students how to make paper boats!
Ms. Baxter's 3rd grade class connected with Freemont, Michigan. Ms. Baxter's class first shared a top 10 list about Sousa and Port Washington, then sang the Sousa song and finally tried to stump the other class with math riddles. The other class read short fables followed by a question and answer session.
Ms. McLaughlin's 3rd grade class connected with Houston, Texas. Both classes presented stories through Readers Theater. The class from Texas also showed us how they can line dance!!
Ms. Milazzo's 2nd grade class connected with Valley City, North Dakota. Ms. Milazzo's students presented their favorite Caldecott Medal books and the other class shared a presentation on dental health facts.
Ms. Szillus' 5th grade class connected with a school in Beaverton, Michigan. Our students created a PowerPoint game on the Westward Expansions. The students in Michigan created a presentation to teach us some fun facts about their town.
Ms. Bartone's Kindergarten class connected with Honey Brook, Pennsylvania. Together, the teachers created a play based on "Horton Hears a Who" by Dr. Seuss. The class in Pennsylvania performed the first half of the play and our class performed the last half. They are planning another connection later in the school year!
Ms. Fitzpatrick's Kindergarten class connected with Paris, Texas. Ms. Fitzpatrick's class created a version of The Snowy Day with photos of themselves using Photo Story and the other class created their own version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? to share.
Mr. Benedict's 2rd grade class connected with Euclid, Ohio . Mr. Benedict's class shared Valentine's Day poems while the other class did a Readers Theater presentation.
Ms. Silver's 3rd grade class connected with Saginaw, Michigan. Ms. Silver's class prepared math questions and the other class presented an alphabet book they wrote about Michigan.
Ms. Lucie's 4th grade class connected with a class in England. The class from England recited and acted out poems while Ms. Lucie's student taught them about famous landmarks of New York.
